If you've been dealing with persistent pain, limited mobility, or recurring injuries, you may have heard us mention fascial counterstrain as part of your treatment plan. We wanted to take a moment to explain what this technique is and how it can help you feel better and move more freely.

What Is Fascial Counterstrain?

Fascial counterstrain is a gentle, hands-on treatment technique that addresses pain and dysfunction in your body by releasing tension in specific tissues. Developed by physical therapist Brian Tuckey building on the work of osteopath Lawrence Jones, this approach recognizes that pain often comes from protective reflexes your body creates in response to injury or stress.

When your body experiences trauma—whether from an injury, surgery, poor posture, or repetitive movements—it naturally tightens certain tissues to protect the area. While this is helpful in the short term, these protective tension patterns can persist long after the initial problem has healed, leading to chronic pain, stiffness, and reduced function.

Fascial counterstrain works by identifying these tender points in your fascia (the connective tissue that surrounds all your muscles, organs, and structures) and gently positioning your body to release the tension. The treatment is remarkably comfortable—there's no forceful manipulation, just precise positioning that allows your nervous system to "turn off" the protective reflex.

The Benefits of Fascial Counterstrain

Effective Pain Relief: Many patients experience significant pain reduction, often after just one session. Because we're addressing the root cause of your pain rather than just masking symptoms, the relief tends to be lasting.

Treats a Wide Range of Conditions: Fascial counterstrain can help with back pain, neck pain, headaches, joint problems, post-surgical pain, sports injuries, and even conditions affecting your internal organs like digestive issues or breathing difficulties.

Gentle and Comfortable: Unlike some manual therapy techniques that can be uncomfortable, fascial counterstrain is extremely gentle. Most patients find the treatment relaxing, and there's typically no soreness afterward.

Addresses the Whole Body: Your body is interconnected, and pain in one area often stems from dysfunction somewhere else. Fascial counterstrain looks at the whole picture, treating the true source of your problem rather than just where you feel symptoms.

Complements Other Treatments: This technique works beautifully alongside exercises, stretching, and other therapies we use in your treatment plan, often making these interventions more effective.

Helps Chronic Conditions: If you've been struggling with pain for months or years, fascial counterstrain offers hope. It can release long-standing tension patterns that other treatments haven't been able to reach.

What to Expect During Treatment

During a fascial counterstrain session, we'll carefully evaluate your body to find specific tender points that indicate dysfunction. Once identified, we'll position your body in a way that reduces the tension in that tissue—you'll simply relax while we hold you in this comfortable position for about 90 seconds. This allows your nervous system to release the protective reflex, and the tissue can return to normal function.

Most patients feel more relaxed and notice improved mobility right away, though some effects continue to develop over the following days as your body integrates the changes.

If you have questions about whether fascial counterstrain might be right for you, we're always happy to discuss how it could fit into your treatment plan. Our goal is to help you feel better and return to the activities you love, and this technique is one of the many tools we can use to get you there.
